Middle School Monday: Mango Delight by Fracaswell Hyman

Librarian M kicks off your summer with this brand new pick!

Mango Delight by Fracaswell Hyman

Twelve-year-old Mango Delight Fuller will not be allowed to get a phone until she turns 13, but that’s okay because her best friend Brooklyn is not allowed to have a phone yet either, so Mango figures she’s set for seventh grade. She’ll have fun running track and hanging out with Brook, and they’ll both avoid the mean girls who already have phones.

Then—disaster! Brook shows up at school with a phone and immediately joins in with the mean girls. When Mango accidentally drops Brook’s new phone in some water and ruins it, her punishment is to get Brook a new phone and she is kicked off the track team. What will Mango do without her bestie and her favorite after-school activity?

Mango really lives up to her middle name—she is delightful and watching her navigate the perils of middle school is a pleasant experience. While Mango does have some trouble in her life (aside from losing her best friend, her father loses his job and Mango feels responsible), the author has a light touch and the story never gets too heavy. What an enjoyable read!
