Still Life with Tornado by A.S. King

New book from A.S. King? Librarian M is on top of it!

It’s time for me to gush about the new book from A.S. King!

Sarah has decided to stop going to school because no one ever does anything original, so what’s the point? Actually, though, someone ruined an art project she had submitted to a competition and she is feeling terrible about that. But actually, actually, there is trouble at home and it has been going on for quite a while.

This is a book about domestic abuse and how it can become an insidious, everyday part of family life.Still Life with Tornado is mostly from Sarah’s point of view, but there are occasional chapters from her mother, who details how things got so bad. King’s story is sad and wonderful and I recommend it for anyone who likes books about family dynamics.

Also, if you are worried that this doesn’t sound weird enough to be an A.S. King book, relax. There is a surreal aspect that totally works, as per usual.
