Friday Get Away Reads: I'll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson

Every summer we like to do something special. This year our bloggers will be giving you their picks for their favorite books to bring on a vacation. Whether you're heading out on a long car trip or catching a flight to paradise, we have the books to put in your carry-on.

Today we have Lisa's perfect travel pick:

I'll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson

If you’re going on a road trip and want to fall in love with some characters and then have your heart wrenched by them, read or listen to I'll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson. It’s the beautifully written story of Noah, a gifted artist, and his daredevil twin Jude. They were amazingly close at age 13, but at age 16 are barely speaking to each other. Noah and Jude’s alternating voices reveal the events that created the chasm between them. Noah’s love for new boy Brian, Jude’s first sexual experience and the guilt that ensued, the tragic loss in their family, both twins’ passion for art, and the ghost who keeps breaking Jude’s pottery are some of the pieces in their heartbreak puzzle. I loved this book when I first read it in 2014, and loved it even more when I listened to it recently.

When you’ve finished I'll Give You The Sun , you can pick up The Sky is Everywhere, Nelson’s first novel which is also achingly beautiful in its treatment of love and loss.
