Friday Getaway Reads: Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

Every summer we like to do something special. This year our bloggers will be giving you their picks for their favorite books to bring on a vacation. Whether you're heading out on a long car trip or catching a flight to paradise, we have the books to put in your carry-on.

Today Maria shares her desert island pick:

Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

Going to the beach?  Well if you could take Libba Bray with you, I can guarantee that you would have an unforgettable experience.  If you can’t, then do the second best thing, take one of her novels.
Beauty Queens would be a good start.  Fifty contestants in the Miss Teen Beauty Pageant think they are going to a fun time at the beach, but the plane crashes.  Left with little food and all the accoutrements they are used to  these beauties have to survive, with their evening gowns and their wits.  You will find an Elvis-loving dictator, reality show pirates and more, much more  coming together only as Libba Bray can create.  Each character is unique, real and absurd but funny too.  There are many themes these young women have to grapple with in this novel, not just feminism and beauty but survival, politics, racism, etc.

If you really want the next best thing (if Libba is too busy to keep you company and hopefully writing the third installment of the Diviners series) take the audio version of Beauty Queens.  Narrated by Libba herself (a former theater major at the University of Texas) she does a superb job bringing her characters to life.  I guarantee you will laugh out loud and you will never forget some of these “beauty queens”.
