I Second That: Honor Girl by Maggie Thrash

Honor Girl by Maggie Thrash

Maggie is an old hand at summer camp. But, this year she wants to break out of her old habits. She takes up shooting instead of canoeing and makes friends with some of the girls in her bunk instead of just chatting with her best friend all the time.

Maggie's growing pains also extend to her romantic interests. Crushes on members of the Backstreet Boys and the guys who tend the grounds of the camp used to be about as far as romantic thoughts went for Maggie's summer of camp. Now Maggie has a crush on someone who might actually like her back, her counselor Erin. But, this has a lot more potential consequences than liking a celebrity.

Ms. Thrash is a writer for Rookie and their confessional, emotionally raw style definitel matches hers. There is a lot of real life aching and obsessing about small mistakes, which anyone who has ever been through the roller coaster of first love will recognize. And it will especially ring true if your summers had a soundtrack of Backstreet Boys, NSync and Britney Spears.
