The Nest by Kenneth Oppel
Steve’s baby brother is very sick and his parents spend a lot of time taking the baby to various appointments and even the ER when there is an emergency. Steve was already anxious before the baby came and the added stress on him and his family is starting to get to him. He used to have bad nightmares about a strange presence standing over him while he slept, but now he has nice dreams about an angel who says that she and her workers can help his brother get better. All she needs is a promise from Steve that he will help when the time comes. Steve agrees to help without getting enough information and soon finds himself caught up in a horrible situation. The being he thought was an angel is really a wasp and she does not plan to help Steve’s brother at all.
The wasps in this creepy book are a perfect manifestation of the kind of anxiety one feels in a situation where something is going very wrong, but there is nothing to do that will help. I recommend this book for younger horror fans who would like a little depth to their scares.
