This week we're going to shed a little light on some books that we love that have gotten a little overlooked....
Num8ers by Rachel Ward
Jem Marsh has a “gift”, or is it a curse? Whenever she looks into peoples’ eyes she sees a number. That number is a date, the day that person will die.Consequently, she leads an isolated life. Wouldn’t you? Along the way she does make a friend, Spider. Spider is a tall, somewhat weird boy. Even though Jem realizes that Spider will die in a few months she does form a friendship with him, after all, we all need at least one friend. One day, as both of them are in line to ride the London Eye, Jem realizes that everyone around them has the same date – that precise day. At Jem’s persistence, both she and Spider take off minutes before a bomb goes off killing the mass of people waiting at the bottom of the ride. Jem and Spider escape with the authorities in hot pursuit for they believe the teens had something to do with the bombing. A story of interracial romance, fast-paced and well written.
I usually don’t enjoy novels that mix reality with fantasy but Ward had me sold on this premise. The ending is a big surprise and if you like this, you will also enjoy the sequels The Chaos; and Infinity.
