Gabi, A Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero

Gabi, A Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero

Gabi knows exactly who her mom would like her to be. A good girl who takes care of the house and her family. Gabi wants to be her own person, though first she has to figure out who that is.

She has two good friends to help her with that. They are in the same boat as Gabi when it comes to figuring out their lives. Sebastian, who is trying to find the perfect time to come out to his parents, and Cindy, who recently found out she's expecting the baby of a guy who she does not want to be her boyfriend.

Gabi is has her own problems at home to add to the mix. A father who can't fight his troubles with addiction and an aunt who thinks she isn't godly enough. She also has a tendency to deal with these problems by eating, which her mother doesn't approve of either.

But through everything Gabi is funny and frank. She is loyal to her friends and a shoulder for them to cry on. And, she is always looking for a way for things to work out. Gabi is a girl who you'd want to be friends with because you know that she would always be in your corner and also always make you laugh when you really needed to.

This book received a lot of awards this past year and those reviewers knew what they were doing. Gabi's voice is fresh and unique, exactly the kind of thing that makes a book stand out from the pack. I'll be thinking about Gabi for a long time to come and if you check this book out, I bet the same will be true for you. This is a debut and I can't wait to see what's next for Ms. Quintero.
