Belzhar by Meg Wolitzer

Release Date: September 30, 2014

Jam lost her boyfriend, Reeve, and now she has been sent to a therapeutic boarding school in Vermont. She’s all set to hate it until she starts attending her Special Topics in English class where she will be studying Sylvia Plath with four other students. Jam will also be required to write in a journal, which she is also all set to hate until she actually starts writing and feels like she has been transported back home to hang out with Reeve.

Whatever magic the journal is working is intoxicating, and all five Special Topics students are under the spell. But, the journals have a limited number of pages—what will happen when everyone has filled them up?

All the kids in Special Topics have been through something painful and though Jam is the focus of the book, everyone gets to take the stage at some point to explain what happened to them and how they are working through it. The journals are an interesting, tangible way to show this. I recommend picking this one up without reading any more about it—you won’t regret it!
