Noggin by John Corey Whaley

Release Date: April 8, 2014

Since Travis was going to die anyway, he decided to let a bunch of scientists freeze his head to see if they might be able to attach it to a healthy body sometime in the future. Hey, it might work and a slim chance is better than nothing, right? Travis figured that maybe he’d wake up about 50 years later and step into a supercool future.

However, that’s not how things work out. Technology advances more quickly than anyone expected and Travis finds himself awake with a new body a mere five years later. Now everything is weird because his girlfriend and best friend are in college while he is still stuck in high school. Travis feels like five years ago was just yesterday, but everyone else has moved on. Especially heartbreaking is the fact that his girlfriend isn’t really his girlfriend anymore—she’s engaged to another guy.

This is a fascinating premise that brings up a lot of problems and questions that wouldn’t come up in any other scenario. Was it fair to give his family and friends a sliver of hope that Travis might be alive again at some point? How would their lives have been different if they had been able to let Travis go completely? How much can Travis expect from people who were his friends five years ago? Will Travis be some kind of weird celebrity for the rest of his life?
