The Hit by Melvin Burgess

Librarian M has a quick review of the newest book from one of YA's always controversial authors:

The Hit by Melvin Burgess

In the near future scientists have invented a drug called Death which gives anyone who takes it a week to live in a state of euphoria, after which they will die. It was invented for people who are suffering from terminal illnesses, but has also taken on life as a street drug. Megastar Jimmy Earle takes the drug and dies at the end of his final concert, touching off a series of riots instigated by a group called the Zealots, who are advocating for income equality.

In the midst of all of this are Lizzie and Adam. Lizzie comes from a rich family; Adam’s family is barely scraping by. They think they are in love, but the events that unfold in the wake of the Jimmy Earle show continually test their resolve. Read this book to follow them through their trails and travails and find out what happens after the Zealots spark a revolution.

Recommended for fans of Little Brother by Cory Doctorow.
