Radio Week: "I Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty

Rachel's got a classic rock song full of defiance to pair with two main characters who are ready to stand up!

Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers:" I Won't Back Down"
Tom Petty is a master of songs that evoke strong feelings in 100 unique words or less, and I won’t back down is no exception. It’s just about as barn-burner-y as Petty songs get, which means not very, but you’ll still find yourself singing along at the top of your lungs when you’re feeling especially defiant. Also, you only have to remember, like, 20 words.

Jennifer Strange of the Ununited Kingdoms is a 15-year old foundling who is spending her indentured servitude managing Kazam, a placement agency for magicians. The problem is there just isn’t much work anymore until one of her magicians makes a prophecy—the last dragon will be slain within the week, and even odder, by Jennifer herself. Why is this important? Well, because once a dragon dies, its hundreds of acres of dragonlands ripe for the taking by anyone willing to brave millions of other greedy land-grabbers.

When the press gets hold of this information, companies, royalty, random people on the street are suddenly very interested in getting in good with Jennifer in the hopes that she can stake a claim to some land on their behalf. But Jennifer doesn’t want to kill a dragon. Can she stand her ground and do what she thinks is right? Or will she back down?

The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (see our full review)

Cassie is only 17 years old, but she has already been recruited to an elite and secret arm of the FBI of other teenagers who show a natural aptitude for solving serial murders. Cassie is adept at reading people, while others are incredible at noticing patterns. When a string of murders seem to point to a new serial killer, the Naturals of course want o get involved. But they don’t until the killer seems to be very pointedly targeting Cassie—though not in the way killers normally view their victims. Because instead of wanting to kill Cassie, this killer seems to want to make her…a killer.
