Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix
In Luke's world, families are only supposed to have two children. Luke is a third child, illegal in his area. He is hiding each and every day, dreading life. Then one day, the forests in front of Luke's house are gone, replaced with new-styled homes. Luke is moved to the attic and has to stay there for the entire days.

In one particular house, he sees children leave: two of each.n one particular big house. Then he sees a body move in the window, the maid has already left, so it must be another hidden child. Then one day when his parent's are gone, Luke sneaks back out the back door. Luke had only been outside a few times since the trees were cut down, it was amazing! Those kids who were the two first-born, they got to go to school, do anything, without worrying they'd be caught. Caught by the population police. He reached at the back door, it was open. His grimy foot stepped inside and … the alarm went off. Screeching shrieks went off, a continuous beeping pattern: Beep! Beep! Beep!

Luke's shallow breathing quickened as a figure kept out of the shadows, pinning him down. "They can't come get us." Luke said. The figure held a knife, it was a girl....

To find out more, you'll have to pick up Among the Hidden!

This descriptive series was adventurous and mysterious. I love how Margaret Peterson Haddix's books mix mystery with sadness.
