Shadows by Robin McKinley

Librarian M bites the latest fantasy novel from Robin McKinley

Shadows by Robin McKinley

Maggie doesn’t like her new stepfather, Val, but her reasons are valid—he has a bunch of totally creepy shadows that are constantly hanging around him. She decides to keep her head down and spend as little time at home as possible while she finishes up her senior year. Unfortunately, events make it impossible for Maggie to stay under the radar and she soon finds herself drawn into a giant, magical mess.

McKinley doesn’t do any hand holding with her world building. She drops you in and expects you to pick things up as the story progresses. At first this is disorienting, but as you read pieces drop into place and the world starts to come into focus. Maggie’s narration is conversational and engaging; she’s fun to hang out with. Recommended for readers looking for a slow-burn fantasy with an exciting ending.
