Thank YOU for a Summer of Awesome!

Katherine here, from Westover Branch Library, writing with highlights from the Summer Reading Program.

First, I have to say “Congratulations!”

This year over 500 teens reached their goal of reading four books over the summer! That is more than ever before! Over 1500 teens have signed up. If you are one of these procrastinators, I’m sorry to say it’s too late to win the giftcards, BUT there is still time to turn in your reading log, pick up a notebook, and send $1 to buy books for the Queens Library. So come on down to your local library location and turn in that reading log before September 7!

We had teen volunteers helping out all over this summer with Summer Reading Sign-Up and programs and anything the teen librarians could throw at them. The volunteers amazed us with their skill and ability to take on any task. If you think you’ve got what it takes to be a library volunteer, look here for more info.

As far as programs, Cupcake Wars was a hit all over the county, so we hope to have that program again soon.

The Shirlington Village Scavenger Hunt was also amazing, with teens getting to know the Village and getting treats from local businesses along the way. If you had a favorite program, let us know in the comments.

The cherry on top was the End of Summer Ice Cream Party! There were over 200 teens and their families in attendance. When the grand prize winner’s name was called a cheer went up! She was there (that’s the first time the winner has actually been there in years) so everyone was really excited for her. I’m sure she will find something nice to buy with her $100 Visa gift card! We also handed out several other giftcards and every teen who came left with a new book of their choice. If you didn’t make it this year, don’t miss out next summer.

Now I have to say: we are so proud of all of you (*tear*) and send our thanks to you for making our jobs fun!
