Top 5 of 2013 (so far): Lisa Takes the Stage

Lisa's picks are not to be missed, be prepared to get swept away:

Quintana of Charyn by Melina Marchetta
The Lumatere Chronicles are some of my favorite, favorite books. They’re all complexly plotted and thought-provoking with characters you come to love, and hate to leave. Dealing with genocide, revenge, love and hope, they’re not light reads, but they’re the best reads ever!

Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson
This one’s an adult book from last year, but how did I miss it in 2012?!? Thanks to Katie’s review, I found it in 2013. (Thanks, Katie!) Alif the Unseen is terrific for older teens, and is part fantasy, part techno-thriller, part love story, and all-round amazing!

How My Summer Went Up in Flames by Jennifer Salvato Doktorski
When a temporary restraining order is put on Rosie for torching her ex-boyfriend’s car, her parents send her on a road trip with the nerdy guy next door and his two friends. This hilarious, heart-warming book is one of my recent favs.

Courage Has No Color by Tanya Lee Stone
This book enraged and inspired me! It tells the story of the “Triple Nickles,” the first black paratrooper unit in America. They were formed during WW II, but never saw battle. The discrimination detailed here is horrifying, but the men’s dignity is inspiring, and it’s hopeful to see how far we’ve come.

OCD, the Dude, and Me : a novel by Lauren Roedy Vaughn
Journal entries, letters to her therapist, and emails tell the humorous story of Danielle’s senior year as she copes with OCD, a social skills class, and her love/less life. I found it funny and eye-opening. (see our full review)
