Up and Coming: Dark Triumph by LaFevers

Katie was a HUGE fan of the first book in this series, and now she's gotten her hands on its sequel. She is ready to tell us about more ASSASSIN NUNS!

Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers

I don’t get to say this very often, so let’s savor the moment: The second book in the His Fair Assassin series is better than the first book. And I really, really liked the first one, Grave Mercy .

In Dark Triumph we follow the story of Sybella who came to the convent with a dark past and painful secrets, but it’s that very past that makes her such an asset to those who serve Death. Given a crucial role in the fight to retain Brittany’s independence and promise of revenge, Sybella is thrust back into the very world from which she fled. But nothing is going as quickly as she anticipated and she feels her madness returning, until she is given a separate mission involving a prisoner and an escape plan gone awry that may very well prove to be her salvation.

Sybella is a fascinating and complex heroine. She has a dark side forged through years of strife that she fears may consume her. In the end it proves that friendship, family, and love--the very things she has always run from--might just be the antidotes she needs to life of misery lived for vengeance. But there are many fights to fight before then and many demons to overcome before she can see herself as anything beyond a tool of death.

The secrets of Sybella’s past are revealed bit by bit, drawing the reader into this stunningly woven story of violence, love, and redemption. Once again, Robin LaFevers combines 15th century France with magic and myth to marvelous, suspenseful, thrilling, and romantic results.
