Up and Coming: Hattie Ever After by Kirby Larson

Hattie Ever After by Kirby Larson

Release Date: February 12, 2013

Hattie Brooks has never shied away from an adventure. In 1917 she'd set out to Montana, on her own, to attempt to set up a homestead. To find out how that went, you need to read Hattie Big Sky, which is a wonderful read for all fans of historical fiction and strong female heroines.

Hattie is back and this time headed for San Fransisco. In Montana, she'd entertained herself by recounting the comings and goings of her friends and neighbors in a little newsletter. Word has been spreading about Nellie Bly, Dorothea Dix and other female journalists who are making a name for themselves in the almost entirely male world of newspapers. Is there a way that she could turn her talent for telling stories into a real career?

Hattie knows other girls her age are starting to think about settling down and there are definitely young men that have their eye on her. But, she just can't help but think that this may be her last chance to make a name for herself. Though she barely knows a soul in California, Hattie Brooks is bound and determined to see her name in newsprint. Even if it means starting at the bottom, scrubbing floors, she isn't bothered, after all, nothing the journalists can throw at her will be as hard as her time in Montana was.

One of the most fun parts about Hattie Big Sky was that it was based on the story of one of her real relatives and fact was almost more incredible than fiction. Hattie Ever After takes us out of that story, but still sticks closely to real events. Once again, it's great to follow a girl's perspective on a time frame when most of the voices you hear are male.
