Old Magic by Marianne Curley

Old Magic by Marianne Curley

Kate has always been aware that the world can be a little bit magical. Her grandmother is a healer who's very familiar with spell work. Kate can do a few spells herself, but nothing to write home about (in her opinion at least). She mostly tries to stay out of the way of the bullies in her Australian school and keep her head down in class. But when Jarrod walks in to her science class, suddenly fading into the background is the last thing on her mind.

It's not just that Jarrod's good looking, it's that the second he walks into her classroom, Kate can feel how powerful he is. There's magic seeping out of him like no one she's ever met before. But, when she asks him about his magical abilities, he looks at her like she's a crazy person.

Jarrod does indeed think that Kate's a little crazy. Either that or she's making fun of him. There's nothing magical about his life. In fact, his family's been plagued by so much bad luck that Jarrod feels completely powerless, NOT full of power like Kate suggests. But when the bad luck turns into something much worse, he can't help but wonder if there's something more to Kate's strange ideas.

I found this book browsing the shelves and I couldn't resist the blurb, "A gripping time-slip novel from a new talent." Time travel is my favorite kind of science fiction and this one had a magical twist to the genre. Not only that but it had a great, strong girl character. Kate may be bullied and considered an outcast at her school, but she is really confident in herself and her abilities. She's ready to do whatever it takes for good to win the day.

This is a fun adventure, perfect for a summer afternoon. There's really something about browsing around that can lead you to some unexpected discoveries! Take some time, the next time you're in the library to wander, who knows what treasures you'll find!
