Teen Author Sighting: John Corey Whaley and Maggie Stiefvater

John Corey Whaley and Maggie Stiefvater at Hooray for Books
- Thanks HfB for the photo!
You may ask yourself, is that John Corey Whaley and Maggie Stiefvater? Sitting at a table in Hooray for Books in Alexandria, VA? Yes! Yes it is! They visited the bookstore last Friday and Katie and Nico were able to hear some behind the scenes stories about The Scorpio Races (see our full review here) and Where Things Come Back (see our full review here) which they will now pass on to you, readers at home. They also were sure to pass on to the authors that both books were featured on TATAL's best of 2011 posts, with The Scorpio Races even taking the #1 spot of our most favorited book.

Name Secrets:
JCW told us the secrets behind the names of his characters. Sure his main character is named Cullen, but it has nothing to do with that other sparkly family of Cullens who live out in Washington State. Instead, all of the characters from Lily, Arkansas have first and last names that are actually the names of small Arkansas town. So, Ada Taylor? A combo of Ada, AR and Taylor, AR. Clever Mr. Whaley, very clever.

Why Water Horses?
When Stiefvater was little, she got an encyclopedia type book of mythical creatures from the library. In there were all sorts of stories about magical beings that might kill you and one of them was the water horse. It took her a loooooong time to figure out how to use work this mythology into a story, but the water horses of Thisby are the result of all that effort.

 Movie News?
We didn't hear any movie news from John Corey Whaley, but we did get a little bit of news from Maggie Stiefvater. Both The Scorpio Races and Shiver (see our full review here)  are heading to the big screen. Shiver goes first and we can't wait to hear more details. We did learn that the people behind it are also the people behind the adaptation of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. We will keep our eyes open for more details

Final Thoughts?
Both the authors had been touring together a bit and they definitely seemed like friends telling each other stories and we all just happened to get to listen.

We are pretty lucky to live in an area where authors stop by and visit a lot, get on the mailing lists for your local bookstores and you'll be sure to know when your favorites are stopping by!
