The Story of Us by Deb Caletti

The Story of Us by Deb Caletti

Cricket's mother has left grooms at the alter, two of them, in fact. She had reasons and they're even reasons that Cricket supports, but it's enough to make a person a little skeptical that her mom is going to actually go through with the marriage thing this time.

Still, Cricket, her brother, her mom and their beloved dog Jupiter are all piled into a beach house along with her grandparents and the husband-to-be's family as well. Normally this would be stressing Cricket out and she'd be trying to make everything run smoothly, but instead, she's distracted. Her mind's just not in it this summer.

Instead, her thoughts are with Janssen. The boy who stood up to her dad when someone needed to, the boy who has made her laugh and feel special for years, the boy who she is so used to having as part of her life that he might as well be her arm.The same boy who she may have messed things up with forever. To try and make sense of what happened between the two of them, Cricket's spending the summer putting everything into letters to Janssen.

Like Ms. Caletti's other books (see our reviews here), this one is full of real and complicated characters. What makes this one special is that it is a book that really is for dog lovers. Janssen is on his way to becoming a veterinarian and Cricket's letters are sprinkled with dog trivia, but more than that is the family's love for their beagle. Jupiter came along right when the family was going through major upheaval and it's always been clear to them just who rescued whom. The love feels very real because it is based on something very true, check out her essay about the real Jupiter.

What I really want to read next is Janssen's story and his letters, I wonder if there's any chance there will be a companion novel?
