Ashes by Ilsa Bick

Since Nico is busy freaking out with excitement about the author event TONIGHT (Are you going? We hope you're going), the mysterious librarian M is back with a book full of creepy things, like zombies.

Ashes by Ilsa Bick

Alex is ready to give up on treatment for her brain tumor. Her doctor has tried almost everything, including experimental treatments, and nothing has worked. Her aunt is there for her, but Alex misses her parents, who died in a tragic helicopter accident a few years ago. She decides to take one last trip into the woods she often visited with her parents. In the forest she meets Ellie and her grandfather. Ellie’s parents have also died….
Wait, is this sounding like a tearjerker? Hah, it is no such thing! This is a zombie apocalypse survival novel with tons of suspense, action, and gore.
While Alex is in the forest some sort of mysterious EMP is triggered, causing everything electronic to stop functioning. It also kills Ellie’s grandfather. Alex and Ellie decide to hike to the closest ranger station to try to find help, but it turns out the fallout from the EMP is much worse than Alex had feared. While the EMP killed lots of people, it also scrambled the brains of others and turned them into flesh-craving monsters. Surviving long enough to get to the ranger station is only the first of many trials Alex is about to undergo.
I’ve barely scratched the surface of all the terrible things that happen to Alex in this book. Fans of survival and horror stories should definitely check this one out.
