Harry Potter Week: There is no Hogwarts without You, Hagrid

Today Youth Services Librarian Julia tells us why the best character at Hogwarts is clearly, the ever faithful, umbrella toting Rubeus Hagrid

Listen, I love Ron, Hermione, Harry, Luna and all the rest of them the same as everybody else...but the absolute best character in Harry Potter is Hagrid.  Hagrid is somebody that can make you feel both completely safe and completely worried for your safety at the same time.  Remember in Chamber of Secrets when he said:

"First Thing you wanna know about hippogriffs, is that they’re very proud creatures, very easily offended.  You do not want to offend a hippogriff.  It may be the last thing you ever do.  Now, who’d like to come and say hello?”

What???  Everybody besides Harry had the good sense to step back so that they wouldn’t get chosen to meet the latest of Hagrid’s dangerous animal pets that he loves way more than is sensible.  Remember Aragon, Norbert, and Fang?  Hagrid’s ability to love huge and scary animals is one of the things that make him so loveable.

Even though Hagrid is completely trustworthy as a person, he definitely should NOT be trusted with important missions.  He always seems to be giving away more information than he is supposed to.  Take, for instance, this conversation from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone:
Hagrid [about Fluffy]: I lent him to Dumbledore to guard the...
Harry: Yes?
Hagrid: Shouldn't have said that.  No more questions, don't ask anymore questions!

Hagrid is hilarious and wonderful at the same time.  One of my favorite moments is in Chamber of Secrets when he says [as Ron burps up slugs]
Hagrid: This calls for specialist equipment (hands Ron a bucket)
Hagrid: Nothing to do but wait 'til it stops, I'm afraid.  Better out than in.

Or, remember this scene in Chamber of Secrets ?
Hermione: Look, Hagrid’s our friend, why don’t we just go and ask him about it?
Ron: That would be a cheerful visit. “Hello Hagrid! Tell us, have you been setting anything mad and hairy loose in the castle lately?
[Hagrid walks up behind them]
Hagrid: Mad and hairy?  You wouldn’t be talkin’ about me, now would ya?
Hermione, Ron, Harry: No.

XOXOXO HAGRID!!!

A look back on many great moments, many of them with our favorite grounds-keeper:
