Harry Potter Week: Neville Backs Down to No One.

Since Katie came in last year with Harry Potter week, we thought we'd celebrate her blog-a-versary with another pick for her favorite character:
“The odd thing is, Harry,” [Dumbledore] said softly, “that is may not have meant you at all. Sibyll’s prophecy could have applied to two wizard boys, both born at the end of July that year, both of whom had parents in the Order of Phoenix, both sets of parents having narrowly escaped Voldemort three time. One, of course, was you. The other was Neville Longbottom.”
Neville Longbottom--the Boy Who Might Have Been the Boy Who Lived. When we first meet Neville, he seems like the classic two-dimensional comic relief character, forever being harassed by his grandmother and having spells backfire on him. But throughout the series, new layers of Neville’s past and character are revealed, and it soon becomes apparent that Neville is destined to be more than a joke and unfulfilled prophecy. He comes into his own and undergoes a transformation so astounding and dazzling that it’s impossible not to love and admire him.

And so in honor of Harry Potter Week (which might have been Neville Longbottom Week), here are a few of Neville’s greatest hits:

From Harry Potter and the Socerer’s Stone

Neville: "You can't go out, you'll be caught again. Gryffindor will be in even more trouble... I won't let you do it. I'll — I'll fight you!"
Ron: "Neville, get away from that hole and don't be an idiot —"
Neville: "Don't you call me an idiot! I don't think you should be breaking any more rules! And you were the ones who told me to stand up to people!"
Dumbledore: And finally, it takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends. I award ten points to Neville Longbottom!
From Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix (film)
Neville: "Fourteen years ago, a Death Eater named Bellatrix Lestrange used the Cruciatus Curse on my parents. She tortured them for information, but they never gave in. I'm quite proud to be their son. But I'm not sure I'm ready for everyone to know just yet."

Harry: "We're gonna make them proud, Neville. That's a promise."
From Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Neville: "We were all in the D.A. together. It was all supposed to be about fighting You-Know-Who, wasn't it? And this is the first chance we've had to do something real — or was that all just a game or something?"
Harry: "No — of course it wasn't —"
Neville: "Then we should come too. We want to help."
From Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Neville: "The thing is, it helps when people stand up to them, it gives everyone hope."
Lord Voldemort: "You show spirit and bravery, and you come of noble stock. You will make a very valuable Death Eater. We need your kind, Neville Longbottom."

Neville Longbottom: "I'll join you when hell freezes over! Dumbledore's Army!"
Mrs. Longbottom: "Have you seen my grandson?"
Harry Potter: "He’s fighting."
Mrs. Longbottom: "Naturally. Excuse me, I must go and assist him."
No doubt, we could all learn something about courage from Neville (and his grandmother, Mrs. Longbottom). By the end of the series the fact that Neville will one day be a professor at Hogwarts seems like the most natural and fitting thing in the world. Maybe he’ll even be made Headmaster someday, because he stepped out of Harry Potter’s shadow long ago.
