Friday Lit Spotlight: Sisters in Sanity

Sisters in Sanity
by Gayle Forman

Brit should have been suspicious when her dad said they were taking a family trip and it wasn't optional. She should have been suspicious when her "step-monster" and her baby half-brother aren't driving with them, instead meeting them at the Grand Canyon. Brit should have been suspicious, but she wasn't because she really wanted to believe that her dad actually wanted to spend some time with her...

Instead, what he was doing was taking her to Red Rocks, an RTC (that's Residential Treatment Center, for you newbies). They take her in, take all her personal items and assign her a room and a diagnosis (Oppositional Defiance Disorder). This is not a place you'd want to spend your summer vacation. It's mostly like jail, except you don't get a trial and you don't know how long you'll be in for and a bit like "survivor" in that you spend all day doing pointless manual labor in the hot sun because someone tells you that you have to.

Brit wouldn't last one week if it wasn't for the help of some of the other inmates. Girls who are just as misunderstood and mistreated as Brit herself. V, Bebe, Martha and Cassie are the girls you definitely want on your side. They know the tricks that help you go under the radar of the treatment professionals and the words to say to each other to remind themselves that it's not them whose crazy, it's this place. They are the Sisters in Sanity. Together, Red Rocks doesn't stand a chance.

Brit's journey is one that you'll be glad you don't have to take yourself, but the girls she meets along the way (and one musician from home who doesn't give up) are worth the trip.

That's such a weird trailer, since it shows Brit being taken forcibly from her home while her Dad watches, and that's not at all what happens in the book! Didn't the publisher read the book before they released a trailer for it!?!?!

I wondered about this too! The real story is much more interesting! Thanks for commenting!
