Friday Lit Spotlight: Five Flavors of Dumb (with video trailer!)

Five Flavors of Dumb
-- Antony John

First off a big congrats to this book for winning the 2011 Schneider Family Book Award earlier this week! This award "honors an author or illustrator for the artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences." Yay for an award to such a fantastic book!

Piper has been having a rough time at home. She recently found out that her parents have raided her college savings account to pay for a cochlear implant for her baby sister, and since Piper is a senior this is a major problem. On top of that, Piper is moderately deaf herself and feeling slighted. And to add icing to the cake, her Dad has been laid off and if Piper is going to go to the college she wants than she may have to figure out a way to make the tuition herself.

In steps "Dumb" a band who Piper first comes into contact with when they have an explosive performance on the front steps of the school (which is totally not allowed). But something about them inspires Piper and she sees the potential to get them a bigger audience and make herself a little cash at the same time...

But the members of the band only know a couple songs (all covers) and when rehearsals turn into screaming matches, Piper is finding that the manager gig is a lot more work than maybe she thought. With a little bit of help from rock history and her good friend (who happens to be an awesome drummer) will she be able to make the "Five Flavors of Dumb" into a band people will actually want to listen to?

If you are looking for a strong narrator and a story that is more a sock to the jaw than a pile of angst, this one is for you!

Here's our book trailer to give you another taste:

This is the first book trailer for DUMB, and it's brilliant. I never thought one of my books would get an actual trailer! This is the best thing ever. Thanks!

(Oh yeah, and thanks for saying nice things about my book. Glad you liked it.)
