Top 10 before 2010: Marcelo in the Real World

Marcelo in the Real World
- Francisco X. Stork

Marcelo's father is constantly telling him that he has to get used to the way things are "in the real world." Marcelo has Aspergers syndrome and his father, Arturo, believes that the world Marcelo is living in (special school, doctor's appointments, therapist appointment and an after school job working with horses), may be what Marcelo wants, but it isn't really preparing him for what Arturo sees as the harsh realities of life. Arturo decides that to get him to get used to the way things really are, Marcelo is to work at Arturo's law office for the summer.

Readers soon learn that Arturo's real world is fraught with questionable activities and moral issues. The law office is involved in some wheeling and dealing and it is not just Marcelo who feels uncomfortable being swept up in it all. The pacing may be a little slow, but you're pulling so hard for Marcelo to make it through the summer with his ideals and spirit intact that this is not really an issue at all.

Check out Marcelo in the Real World for an amazing story about being out of your element, but making a place for yourself anyway.
