Top 10 before 2010: If I Stay

If I Stay
-- Gayle Foreman

Right from the start Mia is a different sort of YA heroine. She is a strong person, she has cool parents who understand her and a boyfriend who shares her passion for music and is just all around a good guy. Mia is a cello-aholic and is pretty much a shoe-in to Julliard in the fall. It seems like Mia's path is pretty much set, except that she still feels a pull to stay in her home town where her family and her boyfriend are.

This is a story of how everything in your life can change in the blink of an eye. One turn of the steering wheel. One icy patch on the road. One principal's decision to call off school for the day.
And suddenly Mia's biggest decision isn't about whether to go to school or not. Suddenly, all that matters is whether or not to stay.
